Burton Albion 0-0 Shrewsbury- Match Report

Defences dominated as Burton held promotion hopefuls Shrewsbury to a goalless draw at the Pirelli Stadium.

Shrewsbury were gifted the chance to get their new year off to a flying start in the eighth minute and were left to rue a wayward finish.

Matt Harrold pounced on a weak back pass by Burton defender Nathan Stanton but dragged his shot wide with only goalkeeper Adam Legzdins to beat.

Harrold also failed to hit the target with a header as the visitors shaded a lively first half.

Burton's best effort came from on-loan Aston Villa starlet James Collins, who was unlucky to see a well-struck 18-yard volley fly straight at Shrewsbury stopper Chris Neal.

The home side came more into the game in the second half and Neal needed two attempts to keep out a curling free kick from substitute Aaron Webster in the 63rd minute.

Neal also saved Adam Bolder's long-range free kick and Collins had a full-blooded volley blocked but genuine scoring chances were at a premium until Webster headed narrowly wide from a Jimmy Phillips cross in the 87th minute.
