Burton defender Ryan Austin is still struggling for fitness after spraining his ankle in the home defeat by Aldershot in November.Other than Austin and long-term absentee Richard Jackson, boss Paul Peschisolido has new other injury or suspension concerns.
Southend will be without Peter Gilbert, Anthony Grant and Bilel Mohsni who are all suspended.
Barry Corr has recovered from a back problem and could start up-front.
Burton boss Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby: "After a great win against Chesterfield you're keen to build on that.
"If anyone can get the game on then it's our groundsman, who is Groundsman of the Year.
"We have had to adapt our training because of the snow with lots of indoor sessions but we have managed to train outdoors at the National Football Centre."
